Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take insurance?
I do not accept insurance directly. If requested, I can provide a superbill/receipt that you may submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement, depending on your out-of-network benefits. I also offer packages with discounts.
How long will this program take?
Progress depends on the client, the history/severity of the fear, and the frequency of sessions. I should be able to give you a better estimate after the first few direct sessions, however the majority of clients will require additional sessions to ensure the fear is mastered and caregivers can maintain progress.
What ages do you work with?
I have extensive experience with individuals aged 2 to 22 and genuinely enjoy working with individuals of varying ages, backgrounds, and interests.
Where do the sessions take place?
Sessions are typically held in the natural environment, such as your home or the setting where the fear occurs (e.g., park, store, doctor's office) as this is essential for meaningful progress. I currently serve Goleta, Santa Barbara and Montecito. For locations outside of these regions (e.g., Buellton or Carpinteria), my standard hourly rate will also apply to travel time and is subject to availability.
Are you a clinical psychologist trained to do this kind of work?
I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), which means I’m extensively trained in evidence-based approaches to behavior change. My Courage Coach work incorporates many of the same methods used by psychologists, including principles drawn from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) such as exposure-based interventions (e.g., systematic desensitization and exposure and response prevention). In addition, I use strategies that have been shown to be highly effective with neurodiverse individuals—such as differential reinforcement, choice, and visual supports like social stories and video modeling—which are also beneficial for a wide range of learners. My approach is practical, individualized, and grounded in well-established, research-supported techniques.
What should we call you?
You can call me Carrie, or Ms. Carrie, or tell your kid I am their "Brave Coach" or "Courage Coach"!
Do you offer any other services?
Depending on my current caseload and availability, I also offer hourly direct ABA intervention and behavioral consult for parents looking for additional support related to their child's development, behaviors, and school services/IEPs.
Courage comes from the Latin cor (heart) and implies heart-centered, enduring strength.
Bravery happens in the moment, whereas courage involves a deliberate, planned decision to proceed, often over time.
